Coloring the Easter eggs

During the service of the Orthros (Matins – the morning service), when we read the 12 Gospels of the Passion of Christ on Holy Thursday evening and enter the Holy Friday, some of our beloved Parishioners, where coloring the Easter eggs in our Kitchen. This is usually done in the morning hours of the day, before sunrise, but this was a great opportunity for many of our Parish to experience and learn this tradition of the coloring of the eggs in remembrance of the miracle with the eggs who become red witnessing to the whole world the most important historical even in the human history – the Resurrection of Christ!

SCHEDULE of SERVICES – before HOLY PASCHA in our Parish

Image result for holy resurrection orthodox iconsDivine Liturgy on the Lazarus Saturday, March 31, 2018, will start from 9:30 am, and on Palm Sunday, the Divine Liturgy will start from 10 am.

  • Holy WEDNESDAY – The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts (the following Passion week will be served Wednesday – April 4th, 2018) from 5:30 pm, and there will be no Catechism for adults this Holy Week and during the Bright Week.
  • Holy THURSDAY – Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great with the Vesper service combined (on the day of the remembrance of the Last Supper, Thursday – April 5th, 2018) will be served from 9:30 am. The reading of the 12 Gospels will start from 6 pm that same day, and during this time, the traditional coloring of the Easter eggs will be in our Parish Kitchen, where everyone is welcome to help and learn this ancient tradition in remembrance of the miracle with St Veronica.
  • Holy FRIDAY – The Royal Lenten Hours will be served from 9:30 am on Friday (April 6th, 2018) and the Funeral of Christ (Epithaphio) will be served from 6 pm with the procession around the Church announcing the sacrificial burial of Christ, at its conclusion (around 8:20 pm).
  • Holy SATURDAY – morning (April 7th, 2018) the Vesper Service with the Liturgy of St Basil the Great will be served from 9:30 am, on the Christ descendance into the Hades. That evening from 11:45 pm, before midnight, the Resurrection Matins service will be served, and the Paschal/Easter Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning from 10 am.
  • Saturday morning (April 7th, 2018) the Vesper Service with the Liturgy of St Basil the Great will be served from 9:30 am, on the Christ descendants into the Hades.
  • That evening from 11:45 pm, before midnight, the Resurrection Matins service will be served, and the Paschal/Easter Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning from 10 am.

Fifth Sunday of the Great Lent – Venerable Mary of Egypt

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent the Orthodox Church commemorates our Righteous Mother Mary of Egypt. The feast day of Saint Mary of Egypt is April 1, however, she is also commemorated on this Sunday due to her recognition by the Church as a model of repentance.

Life of the Saint

Our holy mother Mary was born in Egypt. She had left her parents at the age of twelve to go to Alexandria, where she spent the next seventeen years in debauchery and the greatest profligacy. Living on charity and linen-weaving, she nevertheless offered her body to any man, not being forced to it by dire necessity as were so many poor women, but as though she were consumed by the fire of a desire that nothing was able to appease.
